The Narrow World:
A Film Work made by Melanie Wilson and Gemma Riggs whilst on residency with British Council in Tunis.
November 2015

The Narrow World is new, interdisciplinary film piece focusing on female empowerment in Tunisia, conceptualised by Will Duke and Melanie Wilson and supported by the British Council. Gemma was invited to join the project as filmmaker and spent one week with Melanie in Tunis, working with a group of Tunisian women, filming in and around the city.

Taking Shakespeare’s male speeches as its source material, the piece creates a female expression that both presents and questions ideas of self-determination and authority. Working with professional and amateur female performers in Tunisia the work explores a selection of Shakespeare’s male speeches which form the content of a series of short films presented here. The project combines film, live performance, sound and music to create a highly crafted female re-appropriation of heroism and the power of language.
